Welcome. We provide a specialized, evidence-based psychotherapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. Our service is designed for individuals struggling with the impact of distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to discuss the traumatic memory in extensive detail. Instead, it focuses on reprocessing the memory in a way that reduces its emotional charge and allows your brain's natural healing processes to resume. Here is an explicit explanation of our EMDR service and how it works: 1. The Foundation: Understanding Trauma and Memory When a person experiences a disturbing event, the brain's natural information processing system can become overwhelmed. The memory, along with its associated images, emotions, bodily sensations, and negative self-beliefs (e.g., "I am in danger," "I am powerless"), can get "locked" in the nervous system in its raw, unprocessed form. This is why triggers can cause the memory to feel as vivid and upsetting as the day it happened. 2. The Core Mechanism: Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation to unlock and reprocess these "stuck" memories. This most commonly involves you following your therapist's fingers moving rhythmically back and forth across your visual field. Alternatively, we may use alternating auditory tones delivered through headphones or tactile pulsers you hold in your hands that buzz from left to right. This bilateral stimulation is believed to mimic the brain states associated with Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, a time when the brain naturally processes daily experiences and emotions. 3. The Explicit Process: The Eight Phases of EMDR Our service is delivered through a structured, eight-phase protocol: Phase 1: History Taking & Treatment Planning: We discuss your history and identify specific target memories to address. Phase 2: Preparation: We establish trust and teach you coping skills and stabilization techniques to ensure you can manage emotional distress during and between sessions. Phase 3: Assessment: We pinpoint a specific target memory and identify key components: the vivid mental image, the negative self-belief associated with it, the desired positive belief (e.g., "I am safe now," "I did the best I could"), and the related emotions and body sensations. Phases 4-7: Desensitization, Installation, Body Scan, & Closure: Desensitization (Phase 4): You hold the memory in mind while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (e.g., following my fingers). Sets of eye movements (or other BLS) are conducted until the memory no longer causes significant distress. New thoughts, insights, and associations often arise spontaneously. Installation (Phase 5): We focus on strengthening and "installing" the desired positive belief until it feels authentically true. Body Scan (Phase 6): You scan your body while thinking of the original memory and the new positive belief. Any residual physical tension is targeted with further BLS until the body feels clear. Closure (Phase 7): Each session ends with you in a stable state, using the self-soothing techniques learned in Phase 2. Phase 8: Reevaluation: At the beginning of subsequent sessions, we check the previous work and ensure the positive changes have been maintained. 4. What We Treat: Our EMDR service is highly effective for: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias Depression Complicated Grief Disturbing Memories from childhood, accidents, or violence Performance Anxiety Self-Esteem Issues rooted in past experiences 5. The Outcome: The goal is not to erase the memory, but to desensitize you to it. After successful EMDR, you will still remember the event, but it will no longer trigger the same intense emotional or physical response. The memory becomes "processed" – it feels like a past event that you have learned from, rather than a present threat that controls you. The negative belief is replaced by a healthier, adaptive one. Our service provides a safe, structured, and powerful pathway to resolve the past, so you can live more fully in the present.
